So I recently signed up for the HNG Internship 5, and boy, am I glad.
The first weekend getting in was pretty intense, having to join different channels, keep up with the many messages from over 2000+ people and join new spaces I hadn’t heard of before like Notion.
The most striking thing about the opportunity is the amount of talent gathered in one virtual space, we have the web developers, the Python developers, the .NET developers, the Machine Learning enthusiasts and so much more.
Challenge #1
So the first task was a 3-in-one medley
- Design a simple dashboard-like page using Figma
- Get familiar with Git and Github by making two commits and a pull request
- Start a blog
The last two were familiar enough to me, however, the first!
I am coming from a background of using Adobe Photoshop to create mock up designs, is it difficult? Yes dears, it is, is Figma supposed to be easier to use in designing websites? You guessed it, yes, it is supposed to be easier to use Figma for quick prototyping.

However, you have to consider that this was the first time I was seeing the program.
It has some similarities to Adobe XD, so this made it a tad easier for me to navigate my way around it. It also uses keyboard shortcuts similar to Adobe Photoshop like ‘V’ for Arrow tool and ‘Z’ for Zoom tool, so that was amazing.
Once I had the shortcuts figured out, I moved on to create my first design using Figma, it took me roughly a day and a half, but you can look below to see my first design.

I do have high hopes for the rest of the duration of the internship, I have seen testimonials from past participants and they have been more than wonderful. I noticed that the people who got the most out of the internship were people who were willing to learn, willing to push themselves past what they knew and also people who were willing to work as a team and be successful in the team.
Therefore, this is the mindset I have going in:
“I will push myself, I will be open to learning new things, I will succeed”
I will put up weekly updates on the difficulty of the training process, the challenges I hope to surmount and the ways in which I have pushed myself and I hope you follow me on this…learning journey.
Ciao!
